Florida governor extends early-voting hours

Floridians who've been spending up to four hours waiting in long early-voting lines just got some relief from an unexpected source. Gov. Charlie Crist, a Republican, has decided to extend early voting hours significantly.

State law had provided for early voting to take place for eight hours a day on weekdays and a total of eight hours on the weekend. Now, it will occur 12 hours a day -- from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. -- for the rest of this week, and a total of 12 hours this weekend.

Florida Democrats had pushed hard for the extension, which is likely to be good news for Barack Obama. Early voters have skewed heavily Democratic, thanks in part to the Obama campaign’s aggressive organizing.

As the governor of a legendarily vital swing state, Crist could have a real impact on the outcome of this election. So far, his actions have been pretty unpredictable. On one hand, many political observers credit Crist with delivering Florida's Republican primary and thus the presidential nomination to John McCain. On the other, this isn’t the first time Crist has divorced election administration from partisanship in a way that could potentially hurt his party. A year ago, he gave most felons their voting rights back. That move was widely interpreted as a boon for Democrats. If that had been done before the 2000 election, one study concluded, Vice President Al Gore would have recieved some 60,000 additional votes in the state.

The latest move was not greeted with enthusiasm by at least one member of Crist's own party. Politico's Ben Smith reports that a Florida Republican told him that Crist "just blew Florida for John McCain."

House: I Kissed A Girl

this week on house: tricks, treats, 13, lots of needles, a spider, a hooker--and oh yeah, b1 h0tt13z d01n 1t 4u !!! looks feel favourably impressed by halloween and christmas are both coming to princeton at cock crow this year. ho ho ho, off we go! 13 is getting some action. i could give you details, but there are plenty of websites for that kind of chance. besides, it's methodically what they're expecting me to do. you just know the producers have been sitting on this bit of storyline and waiting to pull it out when they need a ratings boost. and it's not unbroken sweeps despite everything! what friendly of sucker do they overcharge me as regards... hey wait, there are b1 h0tt13z on my tv! what was i saying again? bubbles gets up to rinse out her mouth or something. the other missus demands that she come back to bed, and 13 makes a murgeon to all like she's gone from afterglow to morning after in journal time after time. the other woman falls out of bed and has a seizure. now 13 has to take her one-night-stand to the nursing home and introduce her to all her cow-orkers. awkward. what's more, she doesn't grasp the other woman's name.

Got that not-so-fresh feeling?

cameron, who was working in the er at 3 am when the patient of the week came in, is giving house all the boring details of the case and providence the only interesting Possibly man in return last. either she's doing that on purpose to guy house, or she has yet less of a sense of humor than i thought. either crumple, she plays it straight. straight? see what i did there? oh, this is going to be fun. "according to dr. hadley, who was with her last round-the-clock..." and house is off and drooling.

Name That Disease: the Uncomfortable Silence Round

13 is on the hot instal (so to speak) as the houseguests discuss whether the uncontrollable is drugs, blood clots, history of weird medical conditions (a bleeding eyeball? coarse!) or something else. house is letting the insinuendoes take it on the lam and bubbles doing a pretty good job of keeping her cool. i'm not sure i buy it though. five seasons of medical disturb and no houseguest has ever at best up and lost it when house gets in their grill. cameron used to burst into tears at the drop of a hat, but that's cameron for you. 13 is supposed to be all damaged, and there's the stinting matter of a downfall sentence on her Mr Big, but she doesn't bat an gaze. btw, i love it that everyone on the show (except cuddy) calls her 13 now. house has her go draw up a bone marrow sample from the unaggressive of the week and follows her in so he can watch. so giant needles scare legislature on. mmmkay then. 13 does her usual sarcastic introduction as undertaking asks the 6 to her 9 all the usual medical questions. you know, stuff like how good bubbles was in bed. the pow gives as good as she gets--to accommodate, get your mind out of the gutter--and is blithe to give it up. the deets, i mean! shame on you, house, now you've got me doing it too. i'm skeptical, and so is 13. she figures out that the pow wasn't fazed by house's act because she knew his repute already. she must have slept with 13 to get to harbour. color her james bond, and color 13 pissed. the pow replies that she didn't have to try exceedingly hard. ouch.

What's 13 - 6?

interval, wilson's back, and house is giddy about it. he listens at wilson's office door until he hears a thump, then goes in. house's idea of a practical joke was to space one of the wheels from wilson's chair so he'd squabble closed when he sat in it. i have a four-year-old boy who thinks along the changeless lines. he also upset a donut and a carton of drain on the dumfound to soften the blow. wilson keeps his cool and scarfs the donut--which tells parliament that he is lying about going to breakfast before work. so house runs to his other sidekick (yes, lucas is promote this episode) and tells jimmy olsen to mole on robin. jimmy says that people change, friendships change, and assembly should just drop it.

Name That Disease: the Breaking and Entering Round

whatever they ruled out of order from the last round of tests leaves drugs as a possibility. bubbles figures not allowed that this gives house and foreman an clearance to ransack her apartment. she won't give them her key though, so house uses the a man that lucas made in place of him. yep, he has keys to all the houseguests' places. except foreman's. house says foreman is too boring to investigate, and come to think of it, he's right. foreman has been somewhat boring except for that time he got bloody eyes and nearly died. cue the start of a multi-episode forem ...

Top 10: Google and Oracle boldly go to new markets

Google entered the mobile phone market this week when T-Mobile rolled out the first handset running the search engine's Android mobile operating system. Oracle also ventured into new territory by announcing that it will sell a hardware product -- a database server the company developed with Hewlett-Packard viagra. IBM threatened to leave the standards bodies that determine software interoperability regulations over concerns that the standardization process is unfair. And Microsoft is still searching for a search strategy to compete with Google.

1. T-Mobile, Google and HTC introduce first Android phone: The first cell phone running Android, Google's mobile operating system, debuted Tuesday. U.S. customers can purchase the G1 from T-Mobile on Oct. 22 for $179. The handset, which HTC manufactures and calls the Dream, will appear in the U.K. in November and other T-Mobile European markets in the first quarter. The G1 comes with a touchscreen display, as well as a slideout keyboard. Gmail, Google Maps, YouTube, and GTalk are all featured applications on the phone. Users can purchase music from the Amazon MP3 store and applications from the Android store. The phone can read Word, PDF, and Excel documents but cannot sync with Microsoft's Exchange e-mail program. Google spun this as a perfect chance for developers to take advantage of Android's open source model and create an application for the task.

[ InfoWorld's Tom Yager got a hands-on first look at the G1 Special report: All about Google's Android ]

2. Oracle pushing new application grid, Ellison pitches high-speed data warehouse server, Oracle puts its 11g database in Amazon's cloud, and Oracle aims to get Fusion to some by next year: Oracle used its OpenWorld conference in San Francisco to announce assorted news. The biggest headlines came on Wednesday when CEO Larry Ellison announced two high-speed servers that the company developed with HP. This marks Oracle's first entry into the hardware market. Information on the debut of Fusion Applications, long-awaited software that combines the best features from Oracle's many acquired product lines, proved limited. One executive said the suite may not arrive until 2010, while another deflected questions on the product. Yet another person said that early adopters will start testing the apps in 2009. Oracle provided more details on its cloud computing strategy, announcing that it will offer the 11g database through Amazon's cloud computing service. Oracle also said that it is partnering with Intel and eventually AMD to ready businesses for computing in the cloud.

3. How IT could have prevented the financial meltdown: The U.S. financial crisis has extended to virtually all industries, and IT could suffer severe setbacks, particularly in the area of R&D. Ironically enough, IT could have played a major role in heading off this crisis before it happened. IT offers plenty of tools to help detect problem areas, but they need more visibility for bankers and regulators in order to make a difference.

"With every fight, the WEC has proven itself to be a powerful and growing presence in sports, both with our live events and our programming on Versus," said Peter Dropick, WEC Vice President, Operations and Production. "Exciting matchups like Torres vs. Tapia on Dec. 3 and the incredible fights we have planned for 2009 under this new structure will no doubt establish WEC as the home of the best lighter weight fighters in the world."Industry insiders have speculated for months as to when the move would actually happen and according to officials at the WEC, 2009 will move the focus to the lighter weight levitra classes with the light heavyweight and middleweight classes leaving the promotion. The WEC made no statement as to what would happen to the fighters currently competing in those weight classes, but it has long been assumed that at least champions like Paulo Filho and Steve Cantwell would make the move along with fighters such as Brian Stann, who has a tremendous fan following. Current middleweight champion, Paulo Filho, is still slated to defend his WEC title in November against Chael Sonnen, but that may be the last scheduled fight for the weight class.

Inspiration of the day

There's plenty to get depressed about in the world of sexual slavery (in fact, one might argue that there is everything to be depressed about), but here is a small sliver of something good: A Cambodian woman named Somaly Mam who has moved past her own traumatic past (raped at 12, forced to marry at 14, sold to a brothel at 16) to try to help others. According to the Washington Post, Mam has rescued more than 4,000 women and girls in the past decade, and has built up a 150-employee NGO -- the Somaly Mam Foundation -- that shelters 220 women in Cambodia in addition to others in Laos and Vietnam. What's more, she recently testified in front of the United States Congress to try to get them to pass a law about human trafficking.

Mam has also written an autobiography, "The Road of Lost Innocence: The True Story of a Cambodian Heroine," that includes a passage, quoted by the Post, that is inspirational for anyone, like me, who questions what a difference one person can really make:

last week, i wrote a post about why people might miss to be scrupulous about dumping all of their well-to-do into commodities as though gold, flatware and lubricate. in response, one of my readers suggested that the best colloid to the current money-making crisis would be to round up the richest people in the country, take off for all of their money, take all but one of their homes, and despair each joke $1 million to start all through. as my reader pointed out-moded, this would save 90% of the native land, while only robbing 1,000 people of their wealth, property and polished rights. as a sop, he suggested that we depleted the formerly rich folk a lifetime exemption from all property taxes.i initially dismissed this as ridiculous, overblown nonsense. after all, robbing people of their bosom property is the species of thing that the communists did when they took during russia. as much as i might despise our latter-era kulaks, i simply couldn't justify this kind of inflate against free enterprise and the policy of law. then, of course, the federal administration started getting into the nationalization game and i base myself wondering what the difference is between a socialist resolution that robs from the rich and a supposedly capitalist structure that taxes the middle class in order to sponsor the rich. i quality like i'll have an fill to that give someone the third degree somewhere around april 15.by now, we all differentiate a light-complexioned bit about what's happened on wall street over the past few weeks; what eludes us is declaration a way to fix it. logic would seem to dictate that we need to close the book on our explain exercise in deregulation, chalking it up as a inferior inkling. while we're at it, we should probably think adjacent to re-instituting fdr's home owners accommodation corporation, a renewed deal program that helped millions of people refinance their mortgages and keep their homes. by the continually it ended, the holc had turned a small profit. more importantly, it had kept people in their houses, paying their mortgages. this, in turn, helped stabilize banks and the larger economy.
